Mercedes U.S. EV Sales Plummeted In 2024 While PHEVs Surged
This quarter saw an overall increase of 9% in sales, which has helped to counterbalance the relatively low sales figures from electric models.
- All Mercedes electric vehicles experienced a substantial decline in sales compared to the previous year in 2024.
- The EQA sedan and SUV lost the most, while the EQB lost the least.
- Mercedes is getting ready to unveil a completely new version of the CLA, one that the company expects will attract a significant number of new customers buying electric vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz took a risk when it designed its electric vehicle lineup to have a non-traditional, shapeless appearance. Despite the fact that its EQ models are objectively high-quality electric vehicles bearing one of the most prestigious brand names in the industry, they are simply not attracting buyers. In the U.S. last year, the three available EVs sold significantly fewer vehicles than in 2023, and the EQS saw the largest decrease.
In 2024, the total number of units sold was 6,963, a decline of 52% from 14,499 units in 2023, indicating a sharp drop in electric vehicle sales last year due to increased competition and many buyers opting for hybrids or plug-in hybrids instead.
Last year, sedan and SUV sales didn't improve much, with 11,660 units sold compared to 19,104 units in 2023, which represents a 39% decrease. The EQB, Mercedes' smallest electric model in the U.S., experienced the smallest decline (36%), with sales dropping from 13,797 in 2023 to 8,885 last year.
Mercedes' own data shows that demand for plug-in hybrids is growing rapidly, with sales increasing by 470% compared to the previous year. This is due in part to the fact that the company offered more plug-in hybrid models for sale in 2024 compared to the year before. Mercedes currently offers five plug-in hybrid models in the United States, which offer the best electric-only range in their class.
The Sprinter, for example, has an EPA-rated range of 54 miles due to its large 23.3-kilowatt-hour battery, and it can support DC fast charging at up to 60 kW. Even with lower sales of electric vehicles, electric and plug-in hybrid sales in the States accounted for 15% of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold last year.
