Mexican President Hits Back at Trump With New Name for North America

she can play the name games for different regions, too.

The area is now known as the "Gulf of America."

Sheinbaum held up a large map of North America from 1607 that labeled the continent as “América Mexicana," or "Mexican America," during a news conference. She even teased the idea that maybe Mexico should consider calling the continent by that name.

Why don't we call it Mexican America?" Sheinbaum said as she pointed to the map and smiled. "It does have a nice ring to it, don't you think?

Trump has clashed with Sheinbaum, a left-leaning scientist who became Mexico's first female president in October, since his re-election. The dispute began over Trump's proposal to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican imports—a measure that Sheinbaum has stated she would match if Trump actually implements such a measure.

The president-elect has also stated that undocumented immigrants, regardless of their nationalities, will be deported to Mexico. The city's head, Claudia Sheinbaum, initially resisted the idea, but now Mexico is willing to accept deportees. However, Mexico may decide to restrict the number of certain nationalities it accepts and might even ask for financial reimbursement.

Now Sheinbaum, 62, and Trump, 78, are locked in a heated exchange. Sheinbaum, however, didn't just roll her eyes at Trump's comment on Tuesday that Mexico is "essentially run by the cartels."

"They led him astray," she said, with all due respect.

In a video that's rapidly been shared online, she promised to work with the White House under Trump—but only without compromising Mexico's independence.

“In Mexico, the people are in charge,” she said. “And we're going to work together and understand each other with the government led by President Trump. I'm confident we will - defending our sovereignty as a free, independent, and self-ruling country.”

While Sheinbaum's comments were likely sarcastic when joking about renaming North America, those in the MAGA camp have taken her words seriously and have already started drafting legislation to make President Trump's wish to rename the Gulf of Mexico a reality.

We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, which has a great sound that is fitting for a vast area," Trump said on Tuesday. "The Gulf of America, what a great-sounding name.

There was a real surge of interest from other lawmakers by the afternoon who wanted to co-sponsor the bill.
