Xbox Game Pass Just Quietly Added a Classic RPG With an Unmatched Sense of Atmosphere

It can be tough to go back to older games. The rapid changes in technology and design philosophies make it feel strange, frustrating, or hard to get back into games in a series after playing a newer one. Actually, it's not always that way, and a great example of why it's worth putting aside your modern expectations to play the classics is now available on Xbox Game Pass.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the de facto standard by which all other action RPGs are compared to, as a result of influencing the entire genre.

it feels slower and much more frightening by comparison.

There isn't really any single standout enemy or encounter, but it's the town of Tristram that stuck with me. The church on the outskirts of town had a dungeon that led directly to Hell, but it was the ramshackle village above that really left a lasting impression. Despite its rough-around-the-edges appearance, the dark and depressing atmosphere of Tristram felt notably different from anything else I'd played at the time.

The virtual world was a relatively lawless environment. Cheating was prevalent, and getting ambushed by players with overwhelming powers was just part of the deal, but so was joining forces with more cooperative players to tackle the creepy creatures lurking beneath the cathedral - and maybe even getting some insider tips on how to execute a clever glitch that could level up the playing field.

inspired.

You won't be blown away by it this time around like I was when it first came out, but it's hard to start it up without still feeling that eerily weird sense that solidified its place as a classic and kickstarted one of the most beloved game series in the industry.

is now available on PC Xbox Game Pass.
