It was reported that she passed away at home on January 7, just three days after celebrating her 71st birthday, according to her family.

Nissen has had a distinguished career in broadcast journalism, including her coverage on ABC's "World News Tonight" the evening Princess Diana passed away in 1997.

"She worked tirelessly to equip her students with the skills they needed to think critically, and she also partnered with other teachers to develop new and innovative methods for getting the best results.

"She is remembered for her wit, her knowledge, her kindness, and her care in maintaining lifelong friendships through extensive personal letters," her obituary read.

Nissen is survived by her five remaining siblings and nine nieces and nephews.
