These Are The Top-Selling U.S. Electric Vehicles Of 2024

Tesla remains in the lead, though newcomers have made a significant impact, as 8% of new car sales comprised all-electric models in 2024.

It was described as a "sales slowdown" in 2024. And indeed, the sales of all-electric vehicles did not take off as rapidly as the optimistic projections initially envisioned in the auto industry. Nevertheless, EVs still constituted a new record of 8.1% of new car purchases in the U.S. last year with a total of 1.3 million units sold and are expected to continue their growth.

The company released its highly anticipated annual U.S. sales report today.

For electric sales, driven in part by year-end lease and finance deals and concerns that the new presidential administration might eliminate some or all of the EV tax credits. In the end, electric sales were up 7.3% annually, and that 8% electric market share was also up from 7.8% in the previous year. So it was a successful year for many automakers for electric sales—but not for all of them, according to Cox Automotive.

It was likewise noted that the gains in 2024 were also substantiated by exceptional new products, primarily from General Motors and Honda Motor Co., which collectively sold approximately 80,000 more EVs in 2024 than in 2023," the report stated. "Hyundai Motor Group and Ford Motor Company also significantly increased their EV sales in the previous year.

According to the report, "There was a decline in Tesla sales of over 37,000 units from last year, a drop roughly equivalent to the increase in GM's volume. Additionally, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz also experienced substantial decreases in sales volume in 2024 compared to 2023."

The nationwide rollout of Tesla's Supercharger Network has begun across North America. This move aims to provide owners of electric vehicles with a convenient and extensive network for charging. Founder and CEO Elon Musk outlined the plans in a recent interview stating that "we will begin to roll out this Supercharger network in earnest starting right now."

  3. Ford Mustang Mach-E
  4. Hyundai Ioniq 5
  5. Tesla Cybertruck
  6. Ford F-150 Lightning
  7. Honda Prologue
  8. Chevrolet Equinox
  9. Cadillac Lyriq
  10. Rivian R1S

Let's now take a closer look at what we can gather from these findings.

The successes of Model Y and Model 3 are not entirely unexpected, given that Tesla's leading charging network and the frequent price drops on the cars clearly have an impact. It's still difficult to make a mistake with either of them. What is particularly noteworthy is that the Mustang Mach-E managed to hold its long-standing third place position; the Mach-E has recently undergone several significant updates and the introduction of new trim levels, and it remains one of the first non-Tesla EVs that can use the widely available Supercharger network. The Mach-E is now the best-selling Mustang model overall.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited

The Ioniq 5 had a very successful year, propelling Hyundai to the second position in electric vehicle sales in the U.S., surpassing Tesla was not achieved. (Third place went to GM and fourth to Ford, for those who are interested.) With a native Tesla-style NACS charger installed at the factory and domestic production enabling it to qualify for remaining EV tax credits that the Trump administration did not eliminate, it has the potential for an even more successful year moving forward.

Although demand for the Cybertruck has decreased, it still managed to outsell the F-150 Lightning as America's top-selling electric pickup truck, which is a notable achievement. Nevertheless, the Cybertruck remains a highly divisive vehicle, and the fact that Tesla's entry into the truck market hasn't led to consecutive sales growth is a significant indicator.

General Motors had a remarkable sales year, but the Honda Prologue was the standout performer; as we've mentioned previously, it demonstrates that consumers are eager for high-quality electric vehicles from this Japanese manufacturer. (The generous leasing and financing incentives also played a significant role.)

Rivian R1S

Another positive sign for Rivian was the consistent ranking of the R1S in the top 10 list, which revealed a nearly 4% increase in sales in 2024, despite the setback of a parts issue that forced the company to halt new car production for a longer period than anticipated.
